Insulating homes and buildings in Bloomfield

Bloomfield sits eight miles north of our shop and shares much of Essex County's building profile: early-twentieth-century single-family homes, plus a large number of houses that were converted to two-family use over the decades. Those conversions are where we find the most severe air leakage, because the modifications rarely sealed the cavities they opened up.

The order of operations matters more here than the product choice. We consistently find homes that have had attic insulation added on top of an unsealed attic floor — the batts are there, but the air is still moving straight through the top plates and around the chimney chase. Sealing those penetrations first is what turns the insulation into something that actually works.

Below grade, Bloomfield's older basements and crawl spaces are frequently damp. We use closed cell foam on the rim joist and foundation walls in these spaces specifically because it does not absorb water, so the improvement holds up over time instead of degrading into a mold problem.
