Queens has the most varied housing stock of anywhere we work — detached colonials in Bayside and Forest Hills, attached row homes in Ridgewood and Astoria, garden apartments, and a large stock of two-family homes throughout. There is no single recommendation that fits the borough, which is why we always look at the building before quoting.

For detached homes the pattern matches the rest of the region: an unsealed attic floor doing most of the damage, an uninsulated rim joist doing much of the rest. For attached row homes, the roof deck and the cellar are where the work concentrates, since the side walls are shared.

Two-family homes are their own category. Owners living in one unit and renting the other consistently raise the same two issues: temperature differences between floors and noise transmission between units. Open cell foam in the floor cavity between units addresses both at once, and it is the single upgrade we recommend most often for this building type.
